Hello there,
To all who are interested
in my type 166 schwimmwagen.
Many years ago I restored
a schwimmwagen for a friend of mine. After I started restoring it I
decided I had to have one too, so I started taking measurements and made
card templates of lots of the parts. He also gave me drawings of a
schwimmer, but there were no measurements. Armed with my own various
figures from the schwimmer I restored, I thought if I scale up the
drawing to full-size on lining paper, I could make my own..
I've made plywood
formers to make the major body panels. Smaller panels are made from card
templates and drawings. All the bodywork was made from flat sheet steel
and hand-formed. The parts have all fitted well so far, I have only made
a couple of mistakes, but they were thankfully easy to rectify. The
engine has been started last month, but I still have more to do before I
go for a test drive. I've just fitted reduction the reduction boxes, and
am now about to make the axle cones. Also, I have made a plywood former
to make the o/s petrol tank. At least one of the two tanks will need to
be made and fitted before the test drive. Some pictures are below.
Another update soon.
