II. Driving Instructions:
- push
the gear into neutral
-
pull the handle for front wheel drive completely to the back (the
clutch has to be kicked down too)
-
open the gastap
-
put in the key into the daskboard and turn it to the right
-
press at the button to start the engine (don't step on the gas)
Dynamo light, red
and
Oil Pressure Light, green should
go on
cold engine:
- open the choke lid
- press at the button to start the
engine (don't step on the gas)
hot engine:
- push the button to start the engine
- don't open the choke lid (don't step
on the gas)
When the engine has started immediately stop
pressing at the button!
III. How to drive on land
The gear lever in front
serves to change gear on "normal" roads. The gear lever at the
back serves to switch on the cross-country gear (state, in
front) and the front wheel drive (state, middle).
The front wheel drive
should only be used on rough grounds, on slippery roads and or when you
drive into or out of the water. You can use the front wheel drive with
any speeds, only not when the back wheels are slipping.
IT IS ONLY POSSIBLE TO
SWITCH ON THE CROSS-COUNTRY GEAR WHEN THE NORMAL GEAR IS PUSHED INTO
NEUTRAL.
It is always the best, to
drive in the first gear with a less number of revolutions, except when
the distance the cross-country gear is requires. When you drive in
the first gear with a less number of revolutions, this will raise the
lifespan of the clutch and the gearbox. If a hillside, an acute bend or
another obstacle requires a lower gear, it's the best that you choose a
lower gear immediately. The speed of the Schwimmwagen may not decline
such, it drives by fits and starts. That is the reason why it is the
best to change down taking care of the following table:
|
cross-country gear |
10 km/h |
| 1st |
gear |
17 km/h |
| 2nd |
gear |
31 km/h |
| 3rd |
gear |
51 km/h |
| 4th |
gear |
80 km/h |
|
IV. How to drive into
the water

You should choose the cross-country gear or the first gear (depending
on the bank) and drive slowly into the water, at right
angles to the bank, if that it's possible, to prevent
overflowing water. You should keep driving till the
Schwimmwagen swims without touching the ground. Immediately
steer the wheels in position when you swim in running water.
The cross-country gear can be stayed switched during your
round trip. You should also let idle the engine, let down
the screw using the bar and hook it in.

The screw may not be hooked
with a high number of revolutions. As soon as the "claw"
connection has grabbed, you can drive with a higher number
of revolutions.
